What are Cock Rings?

Cock rings are an awesome but simple device that constrict the penis to keep blood inside, which helps to maintain an erection. Cock rings are like the guy’s version of a push-up bra. When worn behind the testicles, they push the man’s sack up and forward. They are worn on either the shaft of the penis (near the base), or they are worn behind the scrotum.
Many men enjoy the sensation of squeezing, and/or the fullness that cock rings create. I began to play with cock rings several years ago and they do provide an interesting change in sensation. I think every man should explore them at least a few times in their life.

Some men find that cock rings delay orgasm. Other users report that they are more sensitive when wearing rings and orgasm more quickly. I have experienced both results.

Most men wear cock rings behind the testicles (see pic), although some wear them in front (just on the shaft of the penis). They can be worn during orgasm or taken off just before. I prefer to keep it on, and I think most men feel the same.

Wearing a cock ring can make erections firmer and/or longer-lasting, but they are not a “cure” for erectile dis-function. Because of anatomical differences between men, cock rings will not fit all people equally well, but here are some tips for cock rings.

TIPS

  • Rings are available in many different materials including rubber, silicone, leather, steel, glass and nylon/spandex. Silicone is an ideal material. Beware there are unsafe materials out there too.
  • Trimming your pubic hair or shaving it (i.e., man-scaping) is a good idea as otherwise you’ll feel some hair-pinching. If you need a good body groomer/trimmer, this Philips unit is a good one. It’s not perfect but I haven’t found one yet that is.
  • Some people recommend starting with a leather ring with snaps which lets you experiment with sizing, however they tend to be a rather stiff and uncomfortable. I recommend avoiding them.
  • When you’re new to cock rings, take them off after 5-10 minutes to make sure it’s not too tight.
  • A good time to put a cock ring on is immediately after a hot shower. I find that if I’m a little chilly, my testicles will have retreated into my body for warmth, thus making it really difficult to stuff them through the cock ring. But after a hot shower, they are easier to wrangle through the ring.

HOW TO PUT A COCK RING ON

Worn on the shaft: For a small stretchy cock ring, it’s typically easier and best to put them on when you are fully erect.  This will help to constrict the blood vessels and it helps to maintain a strong erection. To put it on, stretch the ring out so the circle is bigger and stick your erect penis through until you get to the base, and then GENTLY loosen your grip until it’s on your shaft. Warning: you don’t want to discover what it feels like to have a super thick rubber band “snapping” on your penis (been there, done that, won’t let it happen again!).

Worn around the balls: For cock rings that are worn around (behind) the testicles, put it on when the penis is soft. A great time to do this is after a hot shower (see previous tip above). Now for the weird instructions… tuck your testicles (one at a time) through the ring, and then tuck your penis through the ring. Sounds weird, right? But it’s correct. Also, lubricants are a good idea, so grab a good water based lube (such as Sliquid H20) and lube the inside of the ring before going through the ball-sack-gymnastics.

What Should I Do if I get Stuck!?  If you have a solid ring (steel, glass) and find you can’t get the ring off, cold water or an ice compress can help reduce the size of an erection to aid in removal. A ring made of silicone is ideal, and normally after an orgasm you can remove the ring from a flaccid penis by pushing the penis back through the ring and then “untuck” testicles.

Vibrating Cock Rings

Vibrating cock rings are a variation where a small mini-vibe is added to a cock ring. That vibe can be for the benefit of your partner, or for yourself if the feeling of a buzzy vibe by your nuts is appealing. It’s not for me, but I like vibrating cock rings for my wife’s benefit with the idea that the vibe will pleasure her clitoris. A big problem with vibrating cock rings is that the vibe won’t always line up to the right spot for your partner’s clit, and she’ll only feel the vibe on the down stroke (when you are fully thrusted inside).

Some of the inexpensive models don’t really provide any constriction on the penis and instead they just hold the vibrator on your shaft. Better units will do both.

girl-on-topTip: When using a vibrating cock ring, an ideal position is “girl on top” so that she can better position her pelvis and align her clit onto the mini-vibe. It can help bring about a wonderful orgasm for her. Renee still remembers a powerful “O” she had that way.

You can also use a vibrating cock ring on a dildo or slip it over a couple of fingers and you won’t have to worry about dropping your vibrator at the wrong moment.

Tantus Cock Rings

Tantus has a wonderful line of cock rings and c-slings. The designer at Tantus who has developed the various C-Rings is a cock ring lover, and it shows in the wonderful products they have produced. Here are a few highlights.

  • tantus-super-soft-c-ringThe Tantus Super Soft C-Ring‘s design was something of a lucky accident. But it is a wonderful beginner’s cock ring because it is very stretchy and soft. It’s also versatile because it can be worn over just the shaft of the penis or as a ring that goes around (behind) the balls and shaft. It’s also versatile because you can stretch it and put it on while flaccid or erect. I can fit the soft c-ring around my nuts and shaft, but I prefer it for a shaft-only cock ring but it’s too snug around my nuts and it’s difficult to get back off without enduring some pain/discomfort to the family jewels. In regard to size, here’s a sizing guide from Love Honey that can help.

  • tantus-beginner-c-ringThe Tantus Beginner’s C-Ring is a nice fat cock ring. I wish Tantus didn’t call it a beginner cock ring because for some of us men, it’s perfect as-is and anything smaller would be too tight. I love this Tantus cock ring because of the pleasurable sensation it provides, and because of how it brings an even fuller feeling to my erect penis. It’s also not nearly as uncomfortable to remove when you’re done. For me, it works best to put it on while I’m soft (flaccid). In contrast, the Super Soft C-Ring is ideally put on while erect. I also like it because it doesn’t pinch hair nearly as much as smaller rings. The Tantus Intermediate C-Ring is just a tad smaller (1.875″ vs. 2″ diameter). You can read my review on that specific cock ring here (it’s also highly recommended).

  • tantus-c-slingThe Tantus C-Sling and Vibrating C-Ring are two additional products from Tantus. In the case of the latter, the vibrating C-Ring is the same size as the Beginner’s C-Ring but it adds a mini-vibe which can be situated so as to line up with a woman’s clitoris, or, it can be spun around so that the vibe is down at the man’s balls for his own pleasurable sensation. In contrast, the C-Sling has a contoured tongue which points toward the butt, and it provides an added stimulation to the perineum during use. [See my recent review of the C-Sling here.]

As a final tip, I enjoy wearing a cock ring during foreplay, especially while giving my wife oral pleasure. In that regard, I appreciate all that I’ve learned from the Jason Julius series on Female Orgasm.

    • Hi, thanks for the visit. For most men, wearing a cock ring helps to maintain an erection. It would be quite rare to lose an erection with a cock ring on.

    • It shouldnt, it should be EXTRA hard and stay harder longer. When i cum with one on, when i finally cum, it shoots in huge bursts of shooting cum. It explodes quiet far. I mean, across the room…

  1. first time user, had a hard time obtaining a erection and heard a cock ring could help, i bought one, but i don’t know if its too tight…when i put it on my penis gets darker, my penis head turns dark almost purple, my veins become very visible…is this too tight?

    • It’s normal for the color of the penis to get darker and to see the veins become prominent. The ring does prevent the flow of blood from leaving the penis, but it doesn’t really block the flow of blood “to the penis” (which is a good thing). They don’t typically help in getting an erection, but they usually help to keep one, once you’ve gotten one.

Where you’ll want to be careful is how long you keep it on, especially during the first several uses. It would be best to not wear it for more than 10 minutes for the first several uses.

  2. Hi I was wondering if its normal for testicles to to retreat back up and through the ring? Maybe I need a smaller size?

    • Yes, that’s probably the case. It might happen if you got cold (air conditioning on high?), but generally it shouldn’t happen if the ring is the right size. I’d try one size smaller.

      • Yeah I was thinking the temperature might have been the culprit. I keep it at around 60 or 65 to be comfortable for me but my balls never hang all the way at that temp. Could I get a ring that’s tight enough to prevent retraction at that temp or would that be unsafe? Or I gonna have to get all hot and sweaty so my balls are all wrinkly and dangly before I can wear one safely?

      • Wow, that’s pretty chilly for adult fun time. That will be a challenge. But here’s a few more thoughts on it all.

You didn’t mention what cock ring you were using. I’d recommend the Tantus brand in your case especially, because their rings are thick and fairly wide which will help with this issue. Next, if you got the 2″ diameter ring, I’d try their 1.875″ ring which they call the intermediate.

The challenge is finding a ring that’s quite snug without being painful. Even though you like the room temp rather cold, a snug-fitting ring should keep “the boys” from retracting back into your body cavity, up to a point. There’s probably still a cold room temp when the inevitable happens.
